Instant Revocation of Service Principal Bearer Tokens with CAE
Microsoft documents how Continuous Access Evaluation can invalidate service-principal bearer tokens within minutes instead of waiting for their normal token lifetime to expire.
What changed
A client-credential token request can advertise the CAE client capability claim xms_cc with the value cp1. CAE-enabled workload-identity tokens can then be revoked when the service principal reaches high risk, is disabled or is deleted.
Technical details
- CAE client capability for service-principal token requests
- Automatic revocation when a service principal is high risk, disabled or deleted
- Manual validation workflow for incident-response readiness
Why it matters
Service-principal bearer tokens normally remain usable until expiry. Rapid revocation provides an operational kill switch when a workload identity or its token is compromised.
Known limitations
- The application requesting the token must support the CAE client capability
- Workload identity protection and tenant prerequisites remain authoritative in the linked Microsoft article
Now check
- Inventory critical automation that uses client-credential access tokens
- Validate CAE and workload-identity protection prerequisites in a test tenant
- Test high-risk or disabled service-principal revocation and confirm subsequent Graph calls are rejected
