Microsoft 365 Education A7 and renewal-based portfolio transitions

Microsoft announced the updated Education portfolio, including A7 with Copilot, Agent 365 and Entra Suite, and a staged transition for legacy education benefits.

What changed

A3 Faculty gains Defender for Office 365 P1; A5 Faculty gains Intune Suite. Paid student licenses will contribute to the tenant storage pool at renewal. A0 is a no-cost Windows student option; Classroom is planned across A2–A7. A7 is generally available; existing entitlements remain effective until the applicable renewal or extension.

Why it matters

Education IT and licensing teams need to plan identity, device-management, AI, storage and student benefits against their own contract dates rather than assume an immediate tenant-wide change.

Known limitations

  • Online Services volume-licensing pricing standardization applies at the first contract renewal or extension on or after May 1, 2027.
  • Most portfolio changes, including retirement of Office 365 A1, Student Use Benefit and free Exchange Online for Alumni, apply at the first renewal or extension on or after January 1, 2028.
  • The announcement does not specify numeric storage allocations; confirm applicable entitlements with Microsoft before changing policies.

Now check

  • Confirm the next contract renewal or extension date and applicable purchase program.
  • Inventory faculty/student licenses, Student Use Benefit, alumni Exchange, Teams configuration and current storage needs.
  • Compare replacement entitlements and A7 security, AI and device-management requirements with the account team or partner; document a transition plan before renewal.
