Coming to Windows 11: An updated Photos experience

We're introducing an updated Photos experience on Windows 11 that makes it easier to browse, organize, and find photos and videos across a user's PC and OneDrive.

What changed

The updated Photos experience introduces a native Photo Viewer and editor; local files remain usable without OneDrive sign-in. AppLocker rules may need the Microsoft.OneDrive.Photos package.

Why it matters

Changes to local and OneDrive photo navigation can alter managed-device support instructions and require validation of existing app and cloud-access policies.

Known limitations

  • Initial rollout is to Windows Insiders; broader Windows 11 availability is planned later in 2026.
  • Most organizations need no new configuration; review intentional app and OneDrive restrictions.

Now check

  • Pilot the updated Photos app on Windows Insider devices; general rollout is planned for later in 2026
  • Review AppLocker packaged-app rules for Microsoft.OneDrive.Photos and existing DisableStoreApps controls
  • Test DisablePersonalSync and DisableNucleusSync OneDrive restrictions while confirming local photos still open without cloud sign-in
  • Verify application deployment, file associations and support guidance before wider adoption
