Applications which require AC-3 audio decoding might close unexpectedly

This issue is more likely to occur in legacy applications, and unlikely for many modern applications.

What changed

After KB5124010 or a later update, applications that rely on Windows built-in AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding can fail to launch or close without warning when affected audio features are used.

Why it matters

The confirmed issue can disrupt legacy games, media players and productivity applications on Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2; Windows Server is not affected.

Known limitations

  • Availability, prerequisites and rollout scope remain authoritative in the linked Microsoft documentation.

Now check

  • Identify Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 devices with KB5124010 or a later update
  • Test legacy applications that use Windows built-in AC-3 decoding, including launch and audio-playback workflows
  • Do not remove the update without a separate risk decision; monitor the Microsoft issue for the planned Windows update resolution
