Devices might experience a black screen or desktop loading issues after sign-in
Microsoft confirms black-screen and desktop-loading failures after sign-in, primarily on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix. Microsoft status: Mitigated.
What changed
After KB5120996 and later updates, affected AVD sessions can show a black screen, fail to start the desktop automatically or record Windows Explorer crashes. Microsoft provides a Known Issue Rollback while preparing a Windows update resolution.
Why it matters
The issue can prevent users from reaching their AVD desktop and can affect existing FSLogix profiles, making it an immediate availability and support risk in virtual desktop environments.
Known limitations
- Availability, prerequisites and rollout scope remain authoritative in the linked Microsoft documentation.
Now check
- Identify Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1 AVD hosts using FSLogix that received KB5120996 or later updates
- Deploy the Microsoft KIR Group Policy for the affected Windows version and restart the hosts
- Retest sign-in, Explorer startup and representative existing FSLogix profiles; use manual explorer.exe launch only as a temporary user workaround
