Desktop background settings are lost or reset on some devices

Microsoft resolved the Windows 11 desktop-background reset issue with KB5124008 on 8 September 2026.

What changed

After KB5120998, background pictures, slideshows and contrast themes could fail to load and fall back to a solid black color. KB5124008 contains the fix for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.

Why it matters

Managed branding and accessibility settings could appear noncompliant and trigger unnecessary policy remediation or support incidents.

Known limitations

  • Availability, prerequisites and rollout scope remain authoritative in the linked Microsoft documentation.

Now check

  • Install KB5124008 on affected Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices
  • Verify picture, slideshow and contrast-theme backgrounds after restart
  • Confirm managed personalization policies remain applied without repeated remediation
