Setup Assistant legacy deprecation for Apple enrollment profiles

Intune has ended support for Setup Assistant (legacy) authentication for iOS/iPadOS and macOS automated device enrollment (ADE) with user affinity to align with modern authentication standards.

What changed

Existing profiles are automatically updated to Setup Assistant with modern authentication, and the legacy option is no longer available when creating or editing profiles; already-enrolled devices remain enrolled and aren't affected. Applies to: iOS/iPadOS macOS.

Why it matters

ADE enrollment profiles with user affinity move from legacy to modern authentication; already enrolled devices remain enrolled.

Known limitations

  • Availability, prerequisites and rollout scope remain authoritative in the linked Microsoft documentation.

Now check

  • Review ADE profiles with user affinity and verify modern authentication is selected.
  • Pilot a new iOS/iPadOS or macOS enrollment and validate sign-in and required app delivery.
  • Update enrollment instructions; do not re-enroll existing devices solely for this change.
